The History of Hutten-Buchdienst

Hutten-Buchdienst is a bookshop in the eastern part of Pretoria and has been operating since 1985 in the provision of books.

As the focus in the beginning was mainly in the provision of German books, it was decided to use a German name for the concern.  Nowadays, however, mainly Afrikaans and English books are sold.
Hutten-Buchdienst has been named after Ulrich von Hutten who was a German poet and reformist.  He outspokenly criticized the Roman Catholic
Church and was one of the first German authors to write in German and not Latin.
“Buchdienst” means book service.  Whereas book stores generally sell only the items available on their shelves, a book service endeavours to provide clients with books that may not be readily available.
Our bookstalls are often found at community and church gatherings.
